The Confraternity of Christian Mothers (CCM) started in France in the mid-19th century by mothers who began to meet to pray for one another and for their children and to encourage one another through the joys and struggles of child rearing. We meet now for the same reasons--to pray for one another and our children and to help each other grow in our vocations as wives and mothers. All women of St. Francis are welcome to join this Confraternity: single, married (with or without children), or widowed.
Under the special patronage of the “Mother of Sorrows” the members are encouraged joyously and hopefully to undertake the important task of training and sanctifying the young souls entrusted to their care. They are schooled to edify one another by word and deed, to support one another by fervent prayer and thus become the mainstay of spiritual life within their own family and a fruitful source of blessing to the community in which they live.
What does that look like at St. Francis of Assisi Oratory?
Mass is offered at 8 am on the Second Saturday of each month for the Confraternity. After Mass, all members are invited to the altar rail for prayers from the CCM booklet led by Fr. Heffernan. A few times throughout the year, we meet after Mass for breakfast, a brief meeting, and a speaker.
We also have a Holy Hour from 7:30-8:30 pm on the Second Tuesday of each month with the intention of praying for vocations within our homes and parish community. We unite to beg Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament for the strength we need, as mothers, to carry out this most precious task. Everyone is welcome (families included), and Confession will be available.
On the first Sunday of each month, members offer their Holy Communion for all of the members of the Confraternity and join together in the Prayer to the Mother of Sorrows at the altar rail following Mass.
We also have an Advent and Lenten Day of Recollection each year.
